information:Birmingham Monthly Meeting

A meeting for worship was first established at Birmingham under the care of Concord meeting in 1704. In 1726/27, a preparative meeting was set up and both meetings were transferred to Birmingham Monthly meeting in 1815 when it was created out of Concord Monthly Meeting in 1815. The Orthodox branch was discontinued in 1922 and its members attached to West Chester Preparative. The existing Hicksite meeting was discontinued and its prep meetings established as monthly meetings, the Birmingham preparative meeting becoming the forerunner of the current Birmingham Monthly Meeting.

Bradford Monthly Meeting

In 1719, a meeting for worship was established for the winter here known as "Brandywine Forks" or simply "Forks" by Kennett Monthly Meeting. Bradford Monthly Meeting was established in 1737 by Chester Quarterly and the meeting for worship and the prep meeting at Bradford were transferred to the Monthly Meeting at that time. The Hicksite branch of the meeting merged with Uwchlan monthly meeting in 1883 to form the Bradford-Uwchlan Monthly meeting, but this meeting was discontinued in 1901 and the members transferred to Sadsbury Monthly Meeting. The Orthodox branch became the current Bradford Monthly Meeting.

Caln Friends Meetinghouse

A preparative meeting at Caln was established by Concord Monthly Meeting in 1716 and Chester Quarterly established the meeting for worship later that same year. In 1737, both meetings were transferred to Bradford Monthly Meeting. The Orthodox prep meeting was discontinued sometime after 1940 and the Hicksite prep meeting was first transferred to Bradford-Uwchlan and then discontinued in 1889. Its members were attached to Uwchlan Prep Meeting.

Fallowfield Friends Meeting

Fallowfield monthly Meeting was established by Western Quarterly from London Grove Monthly in 1811. Prior to that, there had been a preparative meeting at Fallowfield since 1792. The Orthodox branch of this meeting was discontinued in 1838 and its members transferred to London Grove Monthly; the Hicksite branch became the modern Fallowfield meeting.

Goshen Monthly Meeting
814 North Chester Rd., Goshenville, PA 19380 (610) 696-8869 Goshen meeting was set up in 1721/22 by Chester Quarterly from part of the membership of Chester Monthly Meeting and three preparative meetings, Goshen, Whiteland and Willistown, were set up under the new meeting's jurisdiction. In 1939, the preparative meetings were set up as monthly meetings and the original Goshen meeting was discontinued, its membership passed to the new Goshen Monthly meeting. Goshen has a rather unusual set up in that both the Hicksite and the Orthodox branches of the meeting are next to each other in Goshenville. The Hicksites retained the older meetinghouse on the corner of North Chester Road and Paoli Pike, while the Orthodox branch used the newer building, at one time in use by the Grange and now used for the Goshen Friends School.

Homeville Friends Meeting

An indulged meeting known as "Colerain Meeting" was first established in 1828 here by Fallowfield Monthly Meeting. In 1839, the meeting for worship and preparative meeting wer established by Western Quarterly Meeting and the name of this meeting was changed to Oxford. In 1842, the two meetings were transferred to Pennsgrove Monthly Meeting. The name was changed again in 1867 to Homeville and continued as such until the meeting was laid down in 1917 and its members attached to Pennsgrove Monthly Meeting.

Kennett Monthly Meeting

Kennett Monthly Meeting began as Newark Monthly Meeting when it was first set up in 1693 by Chester Quarterly. In 1760, the name was changed to Kennett. The Orthodox branch of the meeting was discontinued in 1939 and its members transferred to New Garden Monthly Meeting, while the Hicksite branch retained the name of Kennett, eventually moving to the current location after it was built in 1958. The original meetinghouse is on Rte 1 at the entrance to Longwood at Kendal (see Old Kennett). The Orthodox branch continued to share the Rte 1 meetinghouse with the Hicksite branch until 1830 when they moved to Parkersville, where they erected a meetinghouse and burial ground.
Little Elk Chapel

Little Elk Indulged Meeting was established in 1825 by Nottingham Monthly meeting, after Nottingham was transferred to Baltimore Yearly Meeting in 1819. Land for the meetinghouse and its graveyard was donated by Job and Ann Sidwell. The meeting was laid down in 1882.

London Britain Meeting

Set up in 1842 by New Garden Monthly as a preparative meeting, after having functioned as an indulged meeting since 1834, London Britain held its first meetings in the home of Richard Chambers of White Clay Creek. In 1834, an acre and a half of land was purchased and the meetinghouse was built. The meeting was laid down by New Garden Monthly some time after 1928 and the members were transferred to New West Grove Preparative, with New Garden retaining both the meetinghouse and the graveyard in trust.

London Grove Friends Meeting

The London Grove meeting was first established in 1792 by Western Quarterly out of New Garden Monthly meeting. The Orthodox branch was discontinued in 1944 and its membership transferred to New Garden, while the Hicksite branch retained the name London Grove. The two-story meetinghouse, built from local stone, was built in 1818. A burial ground adjoins the meetinghouse.

Nottingham

Though the meetinghouse is located in Pennsylvania, the meeting actually is part of Baltimore Yearly Meeting. The meeting was known as West Nottingham in its early history as it was built on the western part of the original Nottingham Lots. Its counterpart was East Nottingham, also known as Brick Meeting, located in Calvert, MD.

Parkersville Meeting

Parkersville Meeting was built in 1830 of local fieldstone by a member, John Parker, and was open regularly until 1939. It now holds an annual meeting for worship each August.

Penns Grove

Penns grove meetinghouse was built in 1833 for the Penns Grove Preprative meeting, which was them merged into Penns Grove Monthly when that meeting was established in 1842. The meeting was laid down in 1852 and is under the care of the Western Quarterly.
Romansville Meeting

Romansville Meeting (Preparative) got its start when the Bradford Preparative meeting was moved by the Hicksites in 1846. It is still in use seasonally.

Schuylkill Monthly Meeting

The Schuylkill meeting, first known as the Charlestown Indulged meeting, was started in 1823 by the Valley Preparative meeting with the permission of Radnor Monthly Meeting. Its one-story stone meetinghouse was erected in 1807 by Enoch Walker to serve as a Friends' schoolhouse and meetinghosue for travelers. In 1815, Walker deeded the schoolhouse and about 2 acres of land to the meeting, along with the burial grounds which were started about this time. In 1826, the name was changed to Schuylkill and the original meeting was laid down by Radnor Monthly. The meetinghouse and burial grounds were retained by the Schuylkill Indulged Meeting. In 1936 the meeting was transferred to Valley Monthly and became the Schuylkill Monthly Meeting in 1954.
Uwchlan Monthly Meeting (Downingtown MM)

Uwchlan Meeting was established in 1763 by Chester Quarterly out of Goshen Monthly Meeting. The Orthodox branch of the meeting moved from Lionville in Uwchlan to Downingtown in 1900 and became the current Uwchlan meeting. The Hicksite branch merged in 1883 with Bradford Monthly to form the Bradford-Uwchlan Monthly meeting, which was discontinued in 1901 and its members transferred to Sadsbury Monthly meeting.

Valley Monthly Meeting

The burial ground for Valley meeting is located on the opposite side of the road, a few hundred yards away.
West Chester Friends Meeting

An indulged meeting for worship was set up in 1810 for members in West Chester of the Bradford, Concord and Goshen monthly meetings. The Hicksite branch of the meeting was estblished as West Chester Monthly Meeting in 1956 when the Hicksite branch of the Birmingham meeting was dissolved. In 1964, the prep meeting for the Orthodox branch merged into this meeting as well. Though there was at one time a burial ground at the West Chester meeting, the graves from that ground were re-located to Oakland Friends, just north of West Chester.
West Grove Friends Meeting

West Grove indulged meeting was established in 1787 out of New Garden Monthly Meeting. The Orthodox branch was discontinued in 1746 and the Hicksite branch prep meeting became part of the West Grove Monthly Meeting in 1919, when the West Grove Monthly Meeting was established. In 1955, the Orthodox branch of New Garden Monthly Meeting was merged into West Grove.

Willistown Monthly Meeting was established in 1939 by Concord Quarterly out of Willistown during the dissolution of the original Goshen Monthly Meeting. The meeting was transferred to Haverford Quarterly in 1955.
