Althouse, Horace M.: 8/28/1940

Horace M. Althouse, 427 First Avenue, Parkesburg, passed away at 8:30 o’clock this morning, in the Coatesville Hospital, aged 36 years. He had been employed at the Lukens Steel Plant.

Mr. Althouse called at the office of Dr. J. A. Perkins, on Monday evening, complaining of a pain in his side. Indications pointed to appendicitis, and he was sent to the hospital, where further examination failed to disclose the appendix as the cause of the trouble, and it was thought that he may have sustained an internal injury. An investigation is being made by Deputy Coroner H. E. Williams, Jr.

Mr. Althouse is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Sarah MacFarland, and two children, Judith, 8 , and Charlotte, 3.

His father, George Althouse, of West Sadsbury, also survives, and there are two brothers, Harvey, of Baltimore, and Roy, of Detroit, Mich., and two sisters, Sarah and Olive.

He was a member of the Parkesburg Presbyterian Church, the Parkesburg Fire Company, and the Eagles, in Coatesville.

William “Bill” Bauer, 64, of Glenmoore, died Sunday, July 2, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy (Gilmore), and three children, daughter Kimberly and husband, Del Stafford of Glenmoore; daughter Rebecca and husband, Ethan Boyer of West Chester; and son Jonathan of Glenmoore.

He was born in Philadelphia, June 5, 1942, to the late William and Mary (French) Bauer. He actively participated in Boy Scout Troop #30. Advertisement Upon graduation from Bartrum High School in 1960 and Temple School of Architectural Design, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. He resided in Chester County for the past 40 years, where he owned and operated Community Maintenance Corp. Berean Bible Church of Pottstown was his home church; missions and teaching kids Sunday school were his passions. Through the years he enjoyed adult baseball and ice hockey, reading, golfing, hunting, fishing and his two black Labs. Interment was in the East Brandywine Baptist Church Cemetery.

George C. Bingaman, Jr., A former Coventryville resident, died at his home in Bellefonte, Centre County, yesterday morning of a heart attack. He was 65. Two sisters of Mr. Bingaman live in the Pottstown area: Elizabeth B., wife of Paul Loomis, Pottstown, R.D. 2, and Julia B., wife of W. Brook Whitman, 218 Chestnut Street. Born in Coventryville, he was the son of the late George C. Bingaman and Hannah (Simpson) Bingaman. Surviving him in addition to his two sisters are his widow, Mary (Weeks) Bingaman; a daughter, Clara , wife of Oliver Morgan, Harrisburg; three sons, George C. Bingaman 3rd, Washington, D.C., and Clarence and Gilbert Bingaman, both of Bellefonte; one grandchild; and three brothers, Paul F. Bingaman, Norristown; Walter R. Bingaman, Center Hill, Fla,, and John Bingaman, Glendale, Calif. Services in charge of a funeral home in Bellefonte will be held from Coventryville Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2o'clock. Interment will be in Coventryville Methodist cemetery.

Elizabeth Davis of West Chester Elizabeth "Betty" Bingaman Davis, 86, of West Chester, passed away at her home Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, after a brief illness.

She was the wife of George T. Davis, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage. Betty was born Sept. 20, 1919, and was a lifelong resident of Chester County. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Ralston Bingaman and Mary Reynolds Bingaman. She was a 1936 graduate of George School. She was employed by East Goshen School District from 1957 until its consolidation with West Chester Area School District. She worked for 24 years as the school secretary at East Goshen Elementary School, before retiring in 1981. Betty was a member of many local organizations and often served on their boards and committees, including The Hickman, AARP of Chester County, the West Chester Senior Center and the New Century Club of West Chester. She also volunteered for many years at the Second Reading Book Store. She had a love of needle crafts; her sweaters and needlepoint works won various awards and will continue to be cherished by her family and friends. Betty was a lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends, West Chester Monthly Meeting. In addition to her husband, she is survived by five sons, Ted Davis and a wife, Edythe of Grady, N.C., Dan Davis of West Chester, Tim Davis and his wife, Mercedes of West Chester, Jeff Davis and his wife, Meredith of Chadds Ford and Patrick Davis and his wife, Kathleen of East Fallowfield; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Davis. There will be a memorial meeting for worship service Saturday, Sept. 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the West Chester Friends Meeting, High and Marshall streets, West Chester. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to The Hickman, 400 N. Walnut St., West Chester, PA 19380. Laura Jamieson Brinton, 91, of Wilmington, died May 22, 2007 at Home.

She was the wife of the late George Watt Brinton. Born in E. Bradford Twp, PA she was the daughter of the late James M. Jamieson and the late Lissie Steele Jamieson She worked at the West Chester Laundry for 10 years, then as a cashier for the Colonial Life Insurance Company retiring in 1978. Laura was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, and a 1933 Graduate of West Chester High School. She was treasurer for the Brinton Association of America Inc, volunteer for the Red Cross during blood drives, an active member of the AARP helping with their newsletters and tours. She was a member of the New Century Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club of West Chester. She is survived by two daughters, Edythe Brinton Davis, Grady, NC, and Barbara Brinton Clough, Wilmington, DE, five grandchildren, George, Elizabeth, Barbie, Sean and Laura, and eight great grandchildren, Hallie, Samantha, Logan, Noah, Ian, Jonathan, Joseph and Abigail. Newlin, Margaret Rudd: 1/1/2005

Margaret Rudd Newlin, 79, of Secane, retired English professor and poet, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease Jan. 1 at Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square.

Dr. Newlin published six volumes of poetry, including The Collected Poems, 1963 to 1986. Her 1976 work, Snow Falls Upward, was nominated for a National Book Award. In 1990, her poem “Rain” was included in Art and Love: an Illustrated Anthology of Love Poetry, published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A native of New York City, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and a doctorate in English literature from Reading College in England. In 1956 she was married to Nicholas Newlin, head of the English department at Washington College in Chestertown MD, where she taught English literature. The couple retired to Shipley Farm in Secane in 1973, where they had previously summered. The property had been in Nicholas Newlin’s family since 1725. Their son Robert said his mother was passionate about animals. Nicholas Newlin died in 1976. Dr. Newlin also is survived by sons James, David and Thomas; and four grandchildren. The funeral service and burial were private.

Reynolds, Isaac G.: 11/10/1943

Isaac G. Reynolds

In the Chester County Hospital at 5:30 o'clock last evening, Isaac G. Reynolds, of Church Street and College avenue, passed away following a heart attack, which he had suffered on Tuesday night. He had suffered from a heart condition for several years, but his death came as a shock to his many friends and relatives. He was in the 80th year of his age.

Mr. Reynolds was born at Peach Bottom, Lancaster County, but had spend most of his life in West Chester. He was a son of the late David M. and Amanda G. Reynolds.

In his early life, he was associatied in the jewelry business in West Chester with a Mr. Hill, and later traveled for a jewelry firm in Detroit, Mich.

In connection with his brother-in-law, Charles M*. McFarland, he established the West Chester Laundry a number of years ago, which they conducted successfully, later selling to Plummer E. Jefferis, it now being conducted by the Jefferis Brothers.

He was a member of the Society of Friends, and a member of the Board of Managers of the Friends Home on North Walnut Street. Through his oversight largely the Hickman House was built, following the receipt of the legacy from the late Nathaniel G. Hickman. He was also a member of the West Chester Club and a trustee of the Dime Savings Bank.

Mr. Reynolds married Elizaeth G**., daughter of the late David M. McFarland, who survices, with three children: Mary R., wife of John R. Bingaman, of Reading; Gregg D., of Reading, and Elwood M., of Westfiled, N.J. There are five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Westchester, Pa., Dec. 10.--The body of Eliza BALLEY, colored, aged about thirty-five years, was found in a pond here today. Her husband, Rev. E. S. BALLEY, pastor of Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, was arrested on suspicion of having murdered her. The couple had frequently quarreled.

David McConkey McFarland, one of the leading and most successful business men of Chester County, and a prominent and public spirited citizen of West Chester, is a representative member of that distinguished class of self-made men, who not only deserve success, but who win it.

He is a son of James and Mary (McConkey) McFarland, and was born in Tredyffrin township, Chester County Pennsylvania, May 6, 1839. James McFarland (father) was a native of Montgomery county, was of Scotch-Irish descent, and in early life came to Chester Valley, where he engaged in farming, and removed to Phoenixville in 1840, where he continued farming and kept the celebrated "Fountain Inn" for five years. At the end of that time he removed to Mercer county, and invested all of his means in iron enterprises. He died April 19, 1849, when in the forty-fifth year of his age. He married Mary McConkey, and reared a family of seven children. Mrs. McFarland, who died February 18, 1891, at eighty-six years of age, was a daughter of John McConkey, a native of the north of Ireland, who married Elizabeth Rickabaugh, and settled in Tredyffrin township, where he followed his trade of cooper for several years, in connection with farming.

David M. McFarland was reared on the farm and received his education in the common schools. At sixteen years of age he went into the great school of life to do for himself, and commenced his remarkably successful business career as a clerk in the office of his maternal uncle, David McConkey, a successful broker, and dealer in mortgages. By his natural aptitude for business and close attention to his duties he became indispensable to the office and in a few years was intrusted with the management of the business. His uncle died February 29, 1868, and in the following month of March, Mr. McFarland successed to the large and renumerative business of the office, which he has continued to develop until it has reached its present large proportions.

On September 11, 1866, Mr. McFarland married Mary M. Rothrock, a sister of Dr. J. T. Rothrock, the great American botanist, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. To Mr. and Mrs. McFarland have been born six children, three of whom are still living, two sons and one daughter: Charles T., who is engaged in business in West Chester; Elizabeth W. and George Keim, the latter now a student at the Pennsylvania State College.

In politics, Mr. McFarland is a republican, but his life has been and is preeminently a business one. He does a money loaning and private banking business, and has devoted himslef to home investments, whereby he furnishes a large amount of capital that is employed in building up and operating different enterprises, and in the development and improvement of many farms. He loans money on mortgages on real estate in Chester, Delaware, Lancaster and many othe rof the best counties of the keystone State. Mt. McFarland is a well-known business man of established integrity, and to his well directed and conservative management of his various enterprises may be attributed a part of his remarkable success. His prosperity is also largely a reward of his ability and perseverance.

It is justly said that the progress and prosperity of a county depends not so much on the natural advantages and facilities it offers, as upon the character and spirit of its leading men, and David M. McFaralnd is among those of that class who have contributed largely to the permanent prosperity and material development of Chester County.
