John Prosser and Sarah Willoughby

Pioneer Settlers of North Gwillimbury Township

John Prosser, 8 May 1796 1-9 February 1852. 2 John is believed to have been born in Florida town, Montgomery County, New York. Research seems to indicate that John was a son of John Prosser Sr. and Anna Haynes. According to family tradition John came to the Bay of Quinte area of Upper Canada at age 16 [1812] with two brothers. Research has shown that this movement to Upper Canada probably took place as late as 1819. In 1820 John married Sarah Willoughby, 9 August 1803-16 January 1889, 3 in the area of the Bay of Quinte [probably in Richmond Township, Lennox and Addington County]. Sarah was a daughter of Josiah Willoughby and Susannah Thompson who had moved from Bern, Albany County, New York to Western, Oneida County, New York before settling in the Township of Richmond (near Kingston), Lennox and Addington County, Upper Canada. In 1821 John and Sarah settled on bush land at Medina, now known as Keswick, in North Gwillimbury Township, York County, which was then part of the Home District of Upper Canada. On 21 November 1830 John was ordained as a minister of the Christian Church in Keswick. John also served as a Justice of the Peace for North Gwillimbury Township. John and Sarah, as well as some of their children and grandchildren are buried in Mann Cemetery, Keswick, Ontario. John and Sarah had ten children and at least 76 grandchildren.
